Manual Lathe

Structure and Components
Conventional lathes typically consist of a horizontal bed, a headstock at one end, and a tailstock at the other. Turning Operations

Definition:
Turning is a primary lathe operation in which a cutting tool removes material from the external surface of a rotating workpiece to create a cylindrical shape. It is one of the most common and fundamental operations performed on a lathe machine.

Purpose:

  • To reduce the diameter of a workpiece to a specified size

  • To produce straight, tapered, or contoured cylindrical surfaces

  • To prepare surfaces for subsequent operations such as threading or finishing

Techniques:

  • Straight Turning: Producing a uniform diameter along the length of the workpiece

  • Step Turning: Creating shoulders or different diameter sections on a single workpiece

  • Taper Turning: Producing a conical shape by gradually reducing the diameter

  • Contour Turning: Forming complex curved profiles on a cylindrical surface

Applications:
